Germany: Biogas tax break approved

The European Commission approved a state aid scheme offering an energy tax exemption for biogas, including landfill and sewage gases, used in heating, electricity production and combined heat and power plants.

The exemption is intended to increase the competitiveness of biogas in the energy market.

The tax break scheme was enforced in 2013.The scheme’s overall budget is €20m up to 30 September 2023, when Germany will have to re-notify the Commission on prolonging the state aid.

The state aid approval was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 6 March 2015.
